Can spouses split health insurance premium to claim tax-saving deduction under section 80D?

Family floater health insurance plan covers two or more members of the family. it may happen that the policyholder may either not be able to pay the premium amount in one go or the premium may be higher than the maximum on which he or she can get tax benefits under section 80D of the Income Tax Act. So can insured persons split the premium in any ratio between himself and his spouse to claim tax-saving deduction under section 80D? Also, currently which insurers issue two separate tax certificates to the spouses for paying the premium in parts for one health policy?
If it is possible then will purchase the family floater policy of 30Lakhs for two individuals.

Hi,
This is a little ambiguous and I haven't found an accurate answer so far.
The income tax clause says
80D. (1) In computing the total income of an assessee, being an individual or a Hindu undivided family, there shall be deducted such sum, as specified in sub-section (2) or sub-section (3), payment of which is made by any mode as specified in sub-section (2B), in the previous year out of his income chargeable to tax.
So, for any customers with such requirement, I'd suggest that
80D benefit can be claimed by husband/spouse if the payment is done from their income. Proposer can be anyone, doesn't matter.
To make split benefit,
Pay the insurance premium payment using any of your credit card.
For eg: ₹40,875
Split this amount into two (or in any proportion), then from your bank account, make a payment to the credit card for ₹20,438 and
from spouse's bank account, make payment to the credit card for balance ₹20,437.
The similar thing may be done from a joint account.
But always check with your CA once.
@Mahavir, can we take this question forward at an appropriate forum or any experts in this an get an accurate answer.
Thank you,
