I have applied for porting of my health insurance to Care insurance company for policy viz. Care Supreme for my nephew. He is already having medical insurance since 2011. He has diabetes and hypertension.

Now Care Supreme has option rider for instant cover for diabetes and hypertension. The company is not providing him Care Supreme due to hypertension diabetes and higher BMI and offering another product with Copay of 20%.

His BMI is 31 marginally on higher side whereas in the Care Supreme prospectus person having BMI of more than 40 are permanently excluded. Also persons having BMI with uncontrollable diabetes is also under permanent exclusion.

In view'of the above facts can he be denied Care Supreme. Please advise

Hello Tejinder,

Given your nephew's medical history, it is best that he continues with his existing health insurance policy. Portability is tricky for people who have a medical history of a chronic illness. The more complicated a case, the lower the chances of getting portability.

Also, the new insurance company has the right to evaluate your application before they accept your proposal form. And, they are not duty-bound to port you into a new policy of your choice. If they find your profile too risky to cover based on your age, lifestyle, health, and other declarations, or if you have poor claims history (claimed multiple times from your old health insurance policy), they can decline your portability application.
