If a person has bipolar disorder, is he/she entitled to get health insurance. It doesn’t matter if the insurance can cover bipolar related hospiltalization.

We breathe insurance :)

Hello Rahul,

Apologies for the delayed response.

In our experience, we have found most insurers not accepting cases with a mental illness. So yes, it will be hard to find insurers who are open to providing health insurance coverage for bipolar disorder.

Now, coming to your second point, we understand you are saying that it is fine if bipolar disorder is not covered, but can insurers cover other hospitalization costs? Note - As per the standardization guidelines issued by IRDAI - Insurers cannot issue policies with permanent exclusion on Mental illnesses. Hence insurers do not have the choice to give a policy with an exclusion on Mental illness-related hospitalization.

What you should do:

  • Contact Government Insurance companies in writing - asking them to provide a cover for the person who has a mental illness. Government insurers are bound to be covering such cases.
  • Secondly, try to get him/her covered through a group policy offered by Banks (Again govt banks could be a better bet - as they are known to be more lenient in their underwriting process)

Important Request: Rahul, it would be really wonderful if you could let us know if this advice was useful for you, and two whether you were able to resolve your problem - what was your experience. Do share this with us whenever you have an update. It would be beneficial for so many with a similar problem to be solved. Thank you.
