Father got diabetic after purchasing Health insurance

Hi Team,

I purchased health insurance for my parents in May. We discovered my father is a slight diabetic in July. Also, now he's gotten it under control and due to age it may come again. Should I inform my health insurer now? What steps should I follow while renewing the policy next year?

Thanks!!

Hi Jayakrishna,

If you are unaware of such health condition while taking the policy, then there no responsibility for insured to report to Insurance company about health conditions discovered after the purchase of the health insurance policy.

Did they conduct any medical tests before the issuance of the policy? if yes and then it is clearly evident that health condition is developed after the issuance of policy.

Hence it is always advisable to go for medicals while taking the policy wherever possible to avoid such situations.

Hope this clarifies.

Thanks,

Viswanath

Hi Rudra,

The first diagnosis of your father's diabetes in July is too close to policy inception for comfort. Per IRDA regulations, you are not required to disclose any illness that's first diagnosed/contracted after policy inception. But I will advise you to inform your Insurer about diabetes when you renew. This will help you.

Dear Rudra

My recommendation

1. Pl write a mail to insurance company stating the date when he is diagnosed with diabetes .

2. Write that why did ho go for medical , did he have any problem . If it was routine then submit any earlier medical report .

This would protect your interest else it will be difficult for you to prove that you were not aware of diabetes at tge time of insurance.
