Smoker/Non-Smoker in Term insurance

I am asking this question out of curiosity.

While purchasing the term insurance, a person is a non-smoker but lets say after a month of purchasing, that person starts smoking. And later down the line he dies because of cancer then will the insurance company liable to pay the claim?

How should a person proceed in this case, whether he should inform the insurance company about smoking and increase the premium and if he tells the insurance company about smoking will the premium remain same or change?

Thanks in advance :)

Dear Shubham

Insurance is a contract of utmost good faith at the time of filling the Proposal form and any change after than have no bearing on contract .

Hence , if one start smoking after the proposal has been accepted then it will not be called non disclosure.

I advise every one to keep a medical report at the time of policy beginning so that this works as evidence .

Best wishes

Hi Shubham

Your question is technically genuine and good if it is the case, But if some one is occasional smoker or tobacco user and hide in initial stage of policy issuance level and have plan to have above theory then the case is totally different, But in both the situation probability of these case undergoing legal settlement will be higher and chances of settlement of either side will be 50 : 50 depending on argument and expenditure done by both side in legal battel ground. So its always advsible to give right and true information for the policy contract to avoid cancellation and rejection at the time of need , as the individual will not be available to justify his case .
